Before Filming Near Railroad Property

Railroad Protective Liability (RPL) insurance is required for any production work near tracks, trestles, or railroad right-of-way. Standard film or event liability does not cover these areas, so an RPL policy must be secured before booking a rail location.
To request coverage, please provide:
● Location and distance from the tracks● Type of work (filming, photography, construction, etc.)● Dates of activity● Name of the railroad company
Providing these details upfront helps ensure smooth approval from the railroad.

f your production, shoot, or project takes place on or near railroad property — including tracks, trestles, bridges, or railroad right-of-way — standard general liability insurance often isn’t sufficient. Railroad Protective Liability (RPL/RRP) insurance provides the required specialized coverage for crews, contractors, and production companies working in that high-risk zone.

RPL insurance is a project-specific policy that names the railroad (or rail company) as “additional insured” to protect them from liability due to work done near or around rail property. It covers bodily injury and property damage if something goes wrong — and abstracts liability away from the railroad.

Whether you plan a one-day shoot by the tracks, a short film near rail lines, a music video on a trestle, or a full production involving scenic railroad cars — Film Emporium can place an RPL policy that meets railroad requirements and protects your cast, crew, and budget.
Because railway insurers treat railroad liability risk differently than typical film/event risk, the policy must be arranged before any work begins, and always in coordination with the railroad’s contractual demands.
